Teatro del Silenzio, Lajatico
The Teatro del Silenzio is an open-air amphitheatre set into the hills of Lajatico, Tuscany, the hometown of Andrea Bocelli. Built at the singer's urging and opened on 27 July 2006 with a concert performed before more than five thousand people, the venue uses the natural bowl of the landscape as its seating and the Tuscan countryside as its backdrop.
True to its name, the theatre stays silent for most of the year: its tradition is a single annual concert each July, with Bocelli, its honorary president, joined by international guests. That one summer evening has grown into an event that draws audiences from around the world to a village in the Pisan hills.
Getting there
The theatre stands on Via dell'Uccelliera outside Lajatico, in the province of Pisa. It is a rural hilltop site, so most visitors arrive by road; allow extra time on concert evenings, as approaches to the village are busy before and after the show.
