Teatro del Maggio, Florence

The Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino is Florence's modern opera house, designed by architect Paolo Desideri and inaugurated on 21 December 2011 with Beethoven's Ninth Symphony conducted by Zubin Mehta. It is the home of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, founded in 1933 as Italy's first music festival. The complex holds a 1,800-seat main opera hall, the Sala Zubin Mehta concert auditorium with an adjustable capacity of roughly 500 to 1,100, and an open-air rooftop cavea used for summer performances.

Getting there

The theatre stands at Piazza Vittorio Gui 1, near the Parco delle Cascine on the western side of the centre. From Santa Maria Novella station it is about a ten-minute walk, or a short ride on tram line T1 towards Villa Costanza to the Porta al Prato–Leopolda stop.

Good to know

What is performed at the Teatro del Maggio? Opera, symphonic concerts and ballet across its halls, with the spring Maggio Musicale festival as the season's centrepiece.

Which hall will my event be in? Check your ticket — productions are split between the main opera hall, the Sala Zubin Mehta and, in summer, the outdoor cavea.
