Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Numbers
TEATRO DEL MAGGIO · FIRENZE
Italy's Oldest Music Festival, Modernized
The Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino — also called Teatro dell'Opera di Firenze — stands at the meeting point of Florence's historic centre and the Parco delle Cascine, designed by the ABDR studio under architect Paolo Desideri. It was inaugurated on 21 December 2011 with Beethoven's Ninth Symphony conducted by Zubin Mehta, and in 2014 it permanently replaced the 19th-century Teatro Comunale as the home of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. The complex includes the 1,800-seat Sala Grande, the flexible 500–1,100-seat Sala Zubin Mehta and a rooftop space.
The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino festival itself was founded in April 1933 by conductor Vittorio Gui, making it Italy's oldest music festival and continental Europe's oldest after Salzburg. Its orchestra has been led by Vittorio Gui, Bruno Bartoletti, Riccardo Muti (1969–1981), Zubin Mehta (principal from 1985, now honorary conductor for life) and, since 2022, Daniele Gatti, and has been conducted by Furtwängler, Walter, De Sabata, Stravinsky and Strauss.
