A Century of SPAL
Opened in September 1928 as Stadio Comunale on the eastern fringe of Ferrara, the ground is one of the oldest still in continuous use in Italy — traditionally cited as the fifth-oldest. Its initial 4,000-spectator capacity was greatly expanded in 1951 to 25,000 when SPAL (Società Polisportiva Ars et Labor) reached Serie A.
The stadium was renamed Stadio Paolo Mazza in February 1982 in honour of SPAL's long-time president. Capacity was reduced to 7,500 between 2005 and 2016 for safety reasons, but the ground was substantially remodelled in 2017–2018 in time for SPAL's return to Serie A, bringing it to its current 16,134 all-seater capacity. It also hosts the annual Italian Bowl American football final and major civic events.
