Renzo Piano's Flying Saucer

Designed by Renzo Piano with engineer Peter Rice and built between 1987 and 1990 on the southern outskirts of Bari, the Stadio San Nicola was conceived as a futuristic landmark for Italia '90. Its upper bowl is famously composed of 26 prefabricated concrete petals separated by eight-metre gaps that serve as both circulation routes and emergency-evacuation funnels, giving the stadium its characteristic flower or flying-saucer silhouette when seen from the surrounding Apulian countryside.

The stadium opened on 3 June 1990 with a friendly between AS Bari and AC Milan, then hosted five matches at the 1990 FIFA World Cup, including the third-place play-off between Italy and England. With 58,270 seats it is the third-largest football ground in Italy after the San Siro and the Stadio Olimpico, and the biggest used by a single club. SSC Bari plays its home matches here, with the stadium also hosting major concerts and occasional Italy national team fixtures.
