Franco Scoglio Stadium, Messina
Franco Scoglio Stadium — in full, Stadio San Filippo - Franco Scoglio — is the main stadium of Messina, Sicily. It opened on 17 August 2004 with a match between Messina and Juventus and holds 38,722 spectators, making it one of the larger grounds in southern Italy. The stadium takes its original name from Contrada San Filippo, the district where it stands, and since 2016 it has also honoured Franco Scoglio, the Messina-born football coach. It is the home ground of ACR Messina and also stages large concerts.
Getting there
The stadium lies in Contrada San Filippo on the southern edge of Messina, some distance from the historic centre. Local buses connect the area with the city, with extra services typically laid on for matches and concerts, and there is space for cars around the ground; taxis are a straightforward alternative on event days.
