A Century of Football in Bologna
Inaugurated on 29 May 1927 as the Stadio Littoriale with a friendly between Italy and Spain, the ground in the Costa-Saragozza district of Bologna was one of the most ambitious sports projects of the inter-war period. Conceived as a multi-purpose arena combining football pitch, athletics facilities, a swimming pool and the still-iconic 42-metre Torre di Maratona, it became home to Bologna FC from the outset and has remained so ever since — one of the longest continuously used stadiums in Serie A.
Renamed in 1983 in honour of former Bologna president Renato Dall'Ara, the stadium was extensively refurbished ahead of the 1990 FIFA World Cup, when it hosted three group-stage matches and a round-of-16 tie. Today it seats around 38,279 and continues to host Bologna FC's home matches alongside occasional Italy national team games and concerts. The 1934 World Cup also held matches here.
