From Airfield to Europe's Biggest Arena

Set on the former Reggio Emilia airfield used in the 20th century as a test track by the Officine Meccaniche Reggiane aircraft works, the Campovolo site became Italy's biggest open-air concert ground almost by accident. From a legendary U2 show in 1997 that drew 146,000 spectators, through to Luciano Ligabue's repeated mega-concerts since 2005 — including a record-breaking 180,000-strong audience that year — the dusty runway proved able to absorb crowds that no Italian stadium could match.

A permanent purpose-built venue, the RCF Arena, was developed from 2016 and officially inaugurated in June 2022 to mark Ligabue's thirty-year career anniversary. Branded as the largest outdoor music venue in Europe, the arena offers a modular capacity scalable from 10,000 up to roughly 100,000, with full stage infrastructure, parking and crowd-management designed for stadium-tour megastars and Italy's biggest homegrown rock acts.
