Mantua's Renaissance Heart

Piazza Sordello is the monumental heart of Mantua, first recorded as Piazza di San Pietro in 1330. Framed by the Palazzo Ducale of the Gonzaga family, the Cathedral of San Pietro with its Romanesque bell tower and the Bishop's Palace, it has always combined civic, religious and political power. The whole ensemble is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site that recognises Mantua and Sabbioneta as masterpieces of Renaissance urban planning.

Each summer the square is transformed into an open-air stage for the Mantova Summer Festival, organised by Mister Wolf with the Municipality of Mantova. For concerts the piazza is split into Zone A (~2,032 places) and Zone B (~6,260), for a combined capacity of around 8,292 spectators. Recent line-ups have included Santana, Nick Cave and Nile Rodgers & Chic.
