Piazza Sordello, Mantua
Piazza Sordello is the monumental heart of Mantua, a UNESCO World Heritage city in Lombardy. Laid out in 1330 and named after the 13th-century poet Sordello, the square is framed by the Ducal Palace, the cathedral, the Bishop's Palace and medieval towers — a setting that has been the centre of town life for nearly seven centuries. In summer it becomes an open-air stage: the Mantova Summer Festival brings Italian and international headliners here, with past guests including Nick Cave and Chic featuring Nile Rodgers.
Getting there
Mantova railway station is roughly a fifteen-minute walk from the square — exit the station and follow signs toward the historic centre and Piazza Sordello. The bus station is around twenty minutes on foot by a similar route.
Good to know
Is Piazza Sordello a permanent concert venue? No — it is a historic public square that is fitted with a temporary stage and seating for summer festival dates, so layouts change from show to show.
What surrounds the square? The Ducal Palace, Mantua's cathedral and a ring of medieval palaces, all a short walk from the rest of the old town.
