Naples' Theatrical Square

Piazza del Plebiscito is the grand civic heart of Naples, a roughly 25,000-square-metre neoclassical square laid out in the early 19th century when Joachim Murat, Napoleon's brother-in-law and King of Naples, commissioned its monumental layout. After the Bourbon restoration, Ferdinand I completed the project by converting Murat's planned tribute building into the church of San Francesco di Paola, whose twin curving colonnades face the Palazzo Reale to define one of Italy's largest and most theatrical urban spaces.

The square took its current name from the 1860 plebiscite that brought Naples into the unified Kingdom of Italy. Used as a car park during the post-war boom, it was finally pedestrianised in 1994 for the Naples G7 summit and has since become the city's flagship open-air stage. Free and ticketed concerts here have drawn vast crowds for artists such as Pino Daniele, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Muse and Maroon 5.
