Piazza del Plebiscito is the largest square in Naples, covering about 25,000 square metres between the Royal Palace and the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola. The space began in the sixteenth century as the Largo di Palazzo in front of the viceregal palace, took its monumental form in the early nineteenth century under plans conceived in the era of Joachim Murat and completed by Ferdinand I, and received its current name in 1860 after the plebiscite that joined the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies to a unified Italy.

The basilica closing the square, built between 1816 and 1846, is one of Italy's most important Neoclassical churches, with a dome inspired by the Pantheon and a sweeping colonnade that echoes St Peter's in Rome.

The event space

For concerts and public events the square is set up as a temporary open-air venue between its two monumental fronts: the hemicycle of the San Francesco di Paola colonnade on one side and the Royal Palace on the other. Stage position, standing zones and any seated sections are defined per event, so the plan on your ticket reflects that production's layout rather than permanent sectors.

Getting there

On metro Line 1, get off at Municipio and walk about seven minutes via Via San Carlo and Piazza Trieste e Trento, or use Toledo station and walk down Via Toledo. From the Vomero hill, the Funicolare Centrale descends to piazzetta Augusteo, a short walk from the square. From Napoli Centrale, take Line 1 towards Piscinola to Municipio.
