PALAU SANT JORDI · BARCELONA

Isozaki's Olympic Masterpiece

Designed by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki and inaugurated on 21 September 1990, the Palau Sant Jordi sits high on Montjuïc inside Barcelona's Anella Olímpica. Its turtle-shell roof — assembled at ground level and lifted hydraulically onto the supports — was a structural showcase ahead of the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, where the hall hosted artistic gymnastics, volleyball and handball, and served as the main venue of the 1992 Paralympics. It has since become Spain's flagship indoor arena, with concert configurations reaching 24,000.

The Palau is one of the most-played venues on the European tour circuit. Frank Sinatra performed during its early years, Bruce Springsteen has visited Barcelona more than a dozen times since 1981 and recorded Live in Barcelona here in 2002, and U2, Madonna, Bryan Adams, Eros Ramazzotti and Laura Pausini have each returned multiple times. The Palau also hosts the FIBA EuroBasket finals, Davis Cup ties and Cirque du Soleil residencies.

Notable Past Performances

From Frank Sinatra to Beyoncé, the Sant Jordi has hosted Barcelona's biggest indoor nights:

  • Bruce Springsteen — Live in Barcelona album recorded here (2002)
  • Madonna, U2, Beyoncé multi-night residencies
  • Bryan Adams, Eros Ramazzotti, Laura Pausini multiple visits
  • 1992 Olympic gymnastics and handball — Paralympic main venue
  • FIBA EuroBasket finals and Davis Cup ties
