Few venues in Europe match the Mura di Lucca: a Renaissance fortification of 4.2 kilometres, completed in 1645, that encircles the entire historic centre and was converted in the early 19th century into a tree-lined public promenade. Each summer, when Lucca Summer Festival line-ups outgrow Piazza Napoleone, the festival moves to the former Campo Balilla bastion — capacity around 40,000 — for the biggest nights of the season.
The Rolling Stones, Roger Waters and Bruce Springsteen have all played here. The 2026 edition brings Neil Young, Katy Perry, Jamiroquai and Zucchero.
Lucca station is just outside the walls; from Florence and Pisa it's a direct train. Cars must be left outside the centre.
