Monte do Gozo, Santiago de Compostela
Monte do Gozo — the "Hill of Joy" — is the rise just outside Santiago de Compostela where pilgrims on the Way of St. James catch their first glimpse of the cathedral's spires. The open-air auditorium built here in 1993 turns that same hillside into one of Galicia's largest concert grounds, with a stage facing a broad standing area and semicircular tiers of concrete bench seating. Capacity figures of around 30,000 or more have been cited for major shows, and the site hosts headline festivals such as O Son do Camiño alongside standalone summer concerts.
Getting there
The venue sits about three kilometres from the centre of Santiago de Compostela. Local buses run up the small road that climbs the hill, and many concertgoers simply walk out from the city — the route follows the final stretch of the pilgrim trail in reverse.
Good to know
Is Monte do Gozo an indoor or outdoor venue? It is fully open-air: an amphitheatre-style bowl with concrete terraces and a large flat area in front of the stage, so dress for Galician weather.
What else is on the hill? The site is a landmark of the Camino de Santiago, with pilgrim monuments and viewpoints over the city a short stroll from the concert bowl.
