Italy's Oldest Active Stadium

The Stadio Luigi Ferraris, universally known as Marassi, is the oldest stadium still in use for football in Italy. It was inaugurated on 22 January 1911 with a match between Genoa and Internazionale, with original capacity around 20,000. In January 1933 it was renamed after Luigi Ferraris, a Genoese footballer, engineer and soldier who died at the front during the First World War. By 1934 it was already hosting World Cup matches.

Marassi is uniquely shared by Genoa CFC, the oldest football club in Italy, and UC Sampdoria. Both teams have used the stadium continuously since 1946. The ground was completely rebuilt for the 1990 FIFA World Cup by architect Vittorio Gregotti, giving it its iconic four-tower English-style design with stands very close to the pitch. The renovation brought capacity to the current 36,599 seats.
