Luigi Ferraris Stadium, Genoa

Opened on 22 January 1911, the Stadio Luigi Ferraris — known to everyone in the city as the Marassi, after its neighbourhood — is the oldest stadium still in use for football in Italy. It began life as a municipal ground holding 20,000 spectators and was renamed in 1933 in honour of Luigi Ferraris, the former Genoa captain who died in the First World War. The ground was completely rebuilt for the 1990 World Cup, taking on the brick-toned, four-tower silhouette it shows today, and now holds around 33,000 spectators.

It is one of the rare grounds in Europe shared by two top-flight rivals: Genoa CFC and UC Sampdoria both call it home, and the Derby della Lanterna between them is one of the most intense fixtures in Italian football.

Stands and sectors

The stadium is made up of four stands. The Gradinata Nord is the traditional home of Genoa's supporters, while the Gradinata Sud belongs to Sampdoria's fans. Along the sides run the Distinti, the only three-tier stand in the ground, and the Tribuna, which faces it and offers a central view of the pitch with a calmer atmosphere.

Getting there

The Marassi sits about one kilometre from Genova Brignole railway station — roughly a 20–25 minute walk along Via Canevari. From Brignole, AMT bus 48 reaches the neighbourhood in about fifteen minutes, and lines 13, 37, 82, 480 and 482 also pass close to the stadium. On match days AMT runs special services, including line CM from Caricamento and line SM from Stazione Principe.

Good to know

Which teams play at the Luigi Ferraris? Both Genoa CFC and UC Sampdoria play their home matches here, sharing the ground across the season.

Where do home fans gather? Genoa supporters fill the Gradinata Nord and Sampdoria supporters the Gradinata Sud; the Distinti and Tribuna suit anyone after a quieter view.

How old is the stadium? It opened in 1911, which makes it the oldest stadium still in use for football in Italy.
