Inaugurated on 14 December 1947 as the Nuevo Estadio Chamartín and renamed in 1955 in honour of long-serving president Santiago Bernabéu, the stadium has been the home of Real Madrid for nearly eight decades. It has hosted four European Cup / Champions League finals (1957, 1969, 1980 and 2010), the 1964 European Nations' Cup final won by Spain, and the 1982 FIFA World Cup final. Generations of Madrid legends — from Di Stéfano and Puskás to Cristiano Ronaldo, Zidane, Raúl, Casillas and Vinícius Júnior — have made it one of football's most decorated grounds.
A €1.3-billion-plus rebuild between 2019 and 2024 added a wraparound steel façade, a retractable roof and a retractable pitch system that slides into an underground greenhouse, opening the bowl up for concerts. Taylor Swift staged the first post-renovation shows on 29 and 30 May 2024 as part of The Eras Tour, with further headline concerts and NFL fixtures planned, alongside continuing duties for Real Madrid in La Liga and the Champions League.
