Rising over the Luz district in north-west Lisbon, Estadio Da Luz — formally the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica — is the home ground of SL Benfica. The current stadium opened on 25 October 2003 with an exhibition match against Uruguayan club Nacional, replacing the 1954 ground of the same name on an adjacent site. It was designed by HOK Sport, the practice now known as Populous, and cost around €160 million to build.

Big occasions arrived quickly. The stadium staged the final of UEFA Euro 2004, and later the UEFA Champions League finals of 2014 and 2020. Following recent renovation work, seating capacity currently stands at 68,100.

Stands and seating zones

The bowl is divided into four stands, each rising through three tiers that continue around the rounded corners:

• Bancada Nascente — the east longside stand, facing the halfway line.
• Bancada Poente — the west longside stand, opposite the Nascente.
• Topo Norte — the north end, behind one goal.
• Topo Sul — the south end, behind the opposite goal.

The central sections of the two longside stands, Nascente and Poente, look straight down on the halfway line and give the clearest view of the build-up play, while the two Topos put you directly behind the action at either goal.

Getting there

The stadium sits on Avenida Lusíada and is straightforward to reach on the Lisbon Metro. Two stations on the Blue Line (Linha Azul) serve the ground: Colégio Militar/Luz and Alto dos Moinhos, both a short walk from the stadium entrances.
