Portugal's Biggest Stadium
The current Estádio da Luz sits in the Luz neighbourhood of northern Lisbon, on the same site as the original 1954 stadium that once held a record 120,000 spectators. Designed by HOK Sport Venue Event (now Populous), it was built for around €160 million and inaugurated on 25 October 2003 with a match between Benfica and Uruguay's Nacional. Its tubular red-and-white skin and pair of suspended canopies were designed around themes of light and transparency.
A UEFA category-four ground, it hosted five Euro 2004 fixtures including the final (Greece 1–0 Portugal), the 2014 Champions League Final (Real Madrid–Atlético) and the 2020 Champions League knockout Final 8 during the pandemic. SL Benfica's biggest derbies against Sporting and Porto, plus regular Portugal national team matches, define its life as the largest stadium in Portugal, with a current seated capacity of 64,591.
