Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, Barcelona's Olympic stadium on Montjuïc

Opened on 20 May 1929 for Barcelona's International Exposition, the stadium on Montjuïc hill was rebuilt in 1989 to become the centrepiece of the 1992 Olympic and Paralympic Games, when it held 67,007 spectators. In 2001 it was renamed after Lluís Companys, the president of the Generalitat de Catalunya executed at nearby Montjuïc Castle in 1940. Today it seats 55,926 and crowns the Anella Olímpica, Barcelona's Olympic ring.

Beyond athletics and football — including its spell as FC Barcelona's temporary home during the Camp Nou works — the stadium has become one of southern Europe's regular stops for stadium concerts and large-scale shows.

Sectors: Tribuna, Lateral, Gols and Corners

The bowl is divided into six areas: Tribuna (the main stand), Lateral opposite it, the two ends — Gol Nord and Gol Sud — and the Corner Nord and Corner Sud sections between them. Each area splits into two tiers, the first closer to the field and the second higher up. For concerts, the field itself opens as a standing or seated floor, with the stands wrapped around it; layouts vary by production.

Getting there

From Plaça d'Espanya — metro lines L1 and L3, plus FGC lines — walk up Avinguda Reina Maria Cristina, where escalators climb Montjuïc towards the Anella Olímpica. Alternatively, take the Funicular de Montjuïc from Paral·lel station (lines L2 and L3). Buses 150, 55, X3 and the N62 night bus stop near the stadium, and shuttle services are often reinforced on big event days.
