Barcelona's Olympic Stadium

Perched on the Montjuïc hill overlooking Barcelona, the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys was originally built in 1927 for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition and Barcelona's failed bid for the 1936 Olympics. When the city was finally awarded the 1992 Summer Games, the stadium was radically rebuilt to designs led by Vittorio Gregotti and a team of Catalan architects, who gutted the interior while preserving the original neoclassical façades and added new tiers that took capacity to around 67,000 for the Olympics' opening and closing ceremonies and athletics events.

In 2001 the venue was renamed after Lluís Companys, the Catalan president executed at the nearby Montjuïc Castle in 1940, in recognition of its symbolic place in Catalan history. With a current capacity of 55,926, the stadium served as FC Barcelona's temporary home from 2023 to 2025 during the rebuild of Camp Nou and has long doubled as one of Spain's premier concert grounds, hosting stadium tours by Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones and Coldplay.
