From San Paolo to Maradona
Inaugurated on 6 December 1959 as the Stadio del Sole and quickly renamed Stadio San Paolo, the Naples ground became home to SSC Napoli and one of Italy's most atmospheric venues. Major renovations preceded Euro 1980 and the 1990 FIFA World Cup, when it was converted to an all-seater and hosted five matches — including the Italy vs Argentina semi-final famously decided by Maradona's penalty.
Further refurbishment in 2019 ahead of the Universiade reduced capacity from around 60,240 to 54,726, replacing seats and adding glass barriers. On 4 December 2020 the city officially renamed the stadium in honour of Diego Armando Maradona, sealing the bond between the Argentine icon and the club he led to two Serie A titles in 1987 and 1990.
