Umbria Jazz's Hilltop Stage
Built in 1937 to designs by architect Giuseppe Lilli on the slopes below Perugia's historic centre, the Arena Santa Giuliana was originally conceived as a multi-purpose sports ground with a natural-turf football pitch ringed by a six-lane athletics track. Set close to the former Santa Giuliana monastery and the Etruscan Acropolis, the venue has long doubled as Perugia's principal open-air gathering place, with its grass surface renovated in 2018 to keep the arena in active sporting use.
Since the 1980s the Arena has been best known as the main outdoor stage of Umbria Jazz, one of Europe's most important jazz festivals, which celebrated its 50th edition in 2023. Each July the pitch is transformed into a 5,000-capacity concert bowl that has hosted Miles Davis, B.B. King, Sting, Eric Clapton, Lady Gaga, Kraftwerk and countless others.
