Arena Flegrea, Naples

The Arena Flegrea is a monumental open-air theatre inside the Mostra d'Oltremare exhibition grounds in Naples' Fuorigrotta district. Designed by architect Giulio De Luca between 1938 and 1940 in the spirit of Greek and Roman theatres, it was inaugurated in 1952, later demolished after closing in 1980, then rebuilt by De Luca himself in updated form and reopened in 2001. With around 6,000 seats across its upper and lower tiers, it ranks among Italy's largest open-air arenas and is a summer fixture for concerts and festivals in the south.

Getting there

The arena sits within the Mostra d'Oltremare complex in Fuorigrotta, west of central Naples. The Mostra–Stadio Maradona railway station serves the area, putting the exhibition grounds within easy reach of the city centre by train, and taxis or buses cover the trip from downtown Naples in a short ride.
