An Open-Air Theatre, Reborn
Designed by architect Giulio De Luca and built between 1938 and 1940, the Arena Flegrea opened as part of the Mostra d'Oltremare complex in Naples' Fuorigrotta district. Conceived as a summer stage for Teatro San Carlo and a showpiece of Italy's overseas exhibition, at inauguration it was among the largest open-air theatres in Europe, with around 10,000–12,000 places. The arena was heavily bombed during World War II and subsequently restored.
A full architectural reconstruction by De Luca himself was completed in 2001, giving the arena its current form with around 6,000 seats — ranking it among Italy's main open-air concert venues after the Arena di Verona. Since reopening it has hosted Bob Dylan, Sting, Andrea Bocelli and Robert Plant, and since 2016 it has been the home of the Noisy Naples Fest.
