Spanish Super Cup 2027: Real Sociedad vs Real Madrid

The 2027 edition of the Supercopa de España takes place in Istanbul from 2 to 6 February, bringing together Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Atlético de Madrid and Real Sociedad.

Unlike a traditional league fixture, this semi-final is a single knockout match. There is no return leg, and the winning team will advance directly to the final on Saturday, 6 February, at RAMS Park, Galatasaray's home stadium.

Real Sociedad arrive at the tournament as the 2026 Copa del Rey winners, having defeated Atlético de Madrid on penalties in the final at La Cartuja in Seville. That achievement brought another major trophy to the San Sebastián club and secured its participation in the Spanish Super Cup.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, bring extensive experience of competing for domestic and European honours. The Madrid club has enjoyed considerable success in this competition, including its Spanish Super Cup triumph in 2024.

With both sides pursuing a place in the final, their meeting in Istanbul adds another chapter to a rivalry that has produced several significant cup encounters.

A Rivalry with Spanish Super Cup History

Real Sociedad and Real Madrid share a particularly interesting connection with the history of this tournament.

The two clubs contested the inaugural Spanish Super Cup in 1982. Real Madrid won the opening leg 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabéu, but Real Sociedad overturned that deficit with a remarkable 4-0 victory after extra time at Atotxa, claiming the first title in the competition's history.

More recently, the teams faced each other in the 2024/25 Copa del Rey semi-finals. Real Madrid progressed 5-4 on aggregate following a dramatic 4-4 second leg at the Bernabéu.

Their latest league meeting, on 26 August 2026, ended in a 4-1 Real Madrid victory, with Kylian Mbappé scoring a hat-trick.

Those results provide an intriguing backdrop to the Istanbul semi-final. Real Madrid have held the upper hand in recent meetings, but Real Sociedad's cup-winning campaign in 2026 demonstrated their ability to succeed in high-pressure knockout football.

Tüpraş Stadium: A Major Football Venue in Istanbul

Tüpraş Stadium, also known as Beşiktaş Park, will host the second semi-final of the Spanish Super Cup 2027.

Situated in Istanbul's Beşiktaş district near the Bosphorus and Dolmabahçe Palace, the stadium offers a distinctive setting for international football. Opened in 2016 on the site of the historic İnönü Stadium, it has a capacity exceeding 42,000 spectators.

The venue has already staged several important European matches, including the 2019 UEFA Super Cup between Liverpool and Chelsea and the 2026 UEFA Europa League final.

Its location on the European side of Istanbul places supporters close to one of the city's best-known waterfront districts.

For Spanish football fans travelling to Türkiye, the match also presents an opportunity to experience a major European football destination with a strong local sporting culture.

The Road to the Spanish Super Cup Final

The Real Sociedad vs Real Madrid fixture follows the opening semi-final between FC Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid, scheduled for 2 February at Fenerbahçe's Chobani Stadium.

Both semi-final winners will then meet on 6 February at RAMS Park to determine the 2027 Spanish Super Cup champion.

Each of the three matches will be played at a different Istanbul stadium, making this edition particularly distinctive.

For Real Sociedad, reaching the final would represent another opportunity to build on their recent Copa del Rey success. Real Madrid will be looking to add another Spanish Super Cup title to their record.
