Málaga vs Real Madrid: A LaLiga Rivalry Returns to La Rosaleda

The January fixture marks the second meeting between these clubs during the 2026/27 league campaign.

Their first encounter took place at the Bernabéu on 30 August 2026, when Real Madrid secured a 4-0 victory. Jude Bellingham opened the scoring, an own goal from Alfonso Herrero doubled the advantage, and Kylian Mbappé added a third before Arda Güler completed the result.

That scoreline provides an important backdrop to the return fixture. Málaga will have home advantage this time, facing a Madrid side that began the season strongly and has continued to compete near the top of the LaLiga standings.

For Málaga, who returned to Spain's top division for the 2026/27 season, hosting opponents of Real Madrid's stature is a significant part of being back among the country's leading clubs.

Real Madrid's First League Visit Since 2018

The previous LaLiga meeting between Málaga and Real Madrid at La Rosaleda was played on 15 April 2018.

Madrid won that match 2-1, with former Málaga midfielder Isco scoring the opening goal before assisting Casemiro for the second. Diego Rolán pulled one back for the home side in stoppage time.

Isco's performance was particularly memorable because of his connection with Málaga, where he established himself as one of Spanish football's most promising young players before joining Real Madrid.

Almost nine years later, the clubs are preparing to meet again at the same stadium.

The contrast between Málaga's recent journey through the Spanish football divisions and Real Madrid's continued presence at the highest level adds another dimension to this January encounter.

Estadio La Rosaleda: Football in the Heart of Málaga

Situated on Paseo de Martiricos, Estadio La Rosaleda has been Málaga's football home since 1941.

The stadium has hosted major domestic and international fixtures, including matches during the 1982 FIFA World Cup and Málaga CF's UEFA Champions League campaign.

Its relatively compact layout places spectators close to the action, while the surrounding neighbourhood reflects the club's longstanding relationship with the city.

For visiting Real Madrid supporters, La Rosaleda offers a different matchday setting from the larger stadiums commonly associated with European football. For Málaga fans, fixtures against Spain's biggest clubs are occasions when the home atmosphere takes on particular importance.

The stadium is located north of Málaga's historic centre, with access available through local transport services and the surrounding city streets.
